So far, I've been the site's only admin, and it's worked out decently well (read: the site hasn't collapsed). But supposing that I get both of my hands stuck in pickles jars, or something equally disastrous, I don't want the site to be bereft of people who can run it. Having other admins would also mean empowering more people to make beneficial changes to the site, and also apps won't sit around if I forget to log in for a few days.
So, I'm going to add at least one more administrator, but I haven't decided how to do it yet. Here are some ideas I've had, in no particular order:
- Make every site member an admin. This allows for the greatest degree of redundancy, and puts us all on equal footing, but it also has the greatest chance of backfiring in the event that we misjudge someone.
- I just pick some people I trust. I think this would be a reliable way to get good people on the team, but I don't like playing favorites, and it doesn't seem especially democratic.
- Anyone who posts an article to the site is eligible to be an admin, provided it stays up. This should, at least, ensure that anyone with admin power has some commitment to the commune. The threshold could also be some higher number of articles.
- Rotate through members in shifts. This sounds like kind of a hassle, but it would be the most equitable way of distributing power short of universal adminship, and if something fishy happens, the culprit should be easy to determine.
I don't foresee administration to be a particularly difficult task — post new apps if you're the first person to get to them, make changes to the site if you think they'll help. I have no intention of disappearing in the foreseeable future, so if all goes well, you won't need to do much at all.
Everyone is encouraged to share their thoughts on this matter, if any.
