On May 20th,
Hylius displayed behavior on the Commune's Discord server that I wish to discuss. I would have made this thread sooner, but Wikidot was experiencing an extended outage. Logs of the incident are available in HTML form here. To summarize the incident:
1. Hylius makes a joke in-character as Jigsaw, claiming responsibility for Wikidot being hacked.
2. A Commune user shares a screenshot of the joke to another server; a UI element in the screenshot shows that the user has Discord set to Polish.
3. A moderator(s) of that server confront Hylius about the post, apparently not realizing it was a joke.
4. Hylius abruptly begins to make overtly anti-Polish statements in the SCP Commune Discord, asserting that "there is one polish person among us", and does not provide an explanation.
5. The user who shared the screenshot admits they did so and states that it was meant as a joke, not harassment.
6. Hylius provides the following explanation:
Yeah, so this was bait (and not the contemporary use of the term), and I fully apologize for the wording and such. I had to be sure.
This server is not Fort Knox, but we do not share happenings going on in this server, no matter what. That is incredibly disrespectful and led to miscommunication with the staff members of another wikidot. Intentions aside, this led to a disciplinary incident. Please do not do this ever again.
I would like to reiterate that I was being facetious and have no contention or issue with Polish people or any who speak the language.
7. I express that messages being shared from the Commune's discord is unsurprising and that Hylius's behavior was unusual and disruptive. I then ask Hylius not to act out on Discord.
8. Hylius states that she did not think the user would "admit they broke the rules and leaked screenshots from this server", and thus used the anti-Polish statements to draw them out. I note that leaking messages from the Discord is not forbidden by the rules. Hylius states that she is no longer comfortable in the server.
9. Hylius and Etoile briefly argue about whether this is an appropriate mode of conflict resolution. Hylius is dismayed that other users are "taking their side" and leaves the server.
Since things have been slow around here, the thread will remain open to comment for two weeks, unless we reach a clear consensus before then. Hylius is also welcome to make her case here, if she so chooses. If she leaves the site before the thread's conclusion, it will remain open to determine what (if any) conditions would apply to her hypothetical return.
My personal opinion is that this mode of conflict resolution that has no place in this community. Attempting to unilaterally enforce perceived rules by playing mind games, while making others uncomfortable in the process, goes against the Commune's principles of honest discussion and community decision-making.
As such, I feel that Hylius is unfit to provide input on membership or policy decisions, and I recommend that her membership be revoked until an established user can vouch that she won't engage in this sort of behavior again. If you have any alternative suggestions for how to address this incident, or have any other input you wish to provide, please comment below.
