Item #: SCP-CXXX

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: Instances of SCP-CXXX are kept in host bodies provided by D-Class personnel. These subjects are kept in various states within Site-66, including but not limited to:

  • Stasis
  • Cryosleep
  • Frozen (Corpse)
  • Standard Humanoid Containment1

Any unrestrained subjects carrying instances of SCP-CXXX are to be treated as Class B biological hazards. Use of UV scans to check for and promptly eliminate urine or fecal matter deposited by subjects carrying SCP-CXXX outside septic containment are to be observed daily. Any unhosted instances of SCP-CXXX are to be terminated on sight.

Description: SCP-CXXX is a human-borne parasitic organism that attaches itself to the human scalp, and, externally, largely resembles the ears of the common housecat (felis catus). The reproductive cycle of SCP-CXXX begins when a fully hosted organism begins gestation. Through polyps threaded throughout the human body, instances of SCP-CXXX deposit eggs within the bladder and colon of the host, and when infected urine or fecal matter encounter cells from a human scalp, these eggs begin to grow, siphoning blood from capillaries in the scalp. The infected subject may notice slightly painful sensations for a very limited amount of time, until the newly hatched instance begins to produce a numbing compound that targets the affected area. For the next 1-2 weeks, the organism begins to sprout the visible portion of the parasite; the "ears" begin to grow at roughly the same rate, as tendrils move below the skin to 2 optimal areas on the scalp.

At this point, a subsurface development of the middle ear, eardrum, and Eustachian tubes begin. As these grow, they require increasingly larger root systems to sustain themselves, introducing polyps that begin to scrape away and then penetrate the skull, entering the frontal and parietal lobe. These introduce the first psychoactive effects of SCP-CXXX, and are believed to be inadvertant, as they are not beneficial to the organism. These include mood swings and sensory issues. As the tendrils move to other portions of the brain, changes in the occipital and temporal lobes are believed to be intentional. These tendrils act as nerves, and when penetrating the host brain, the subject begins to and slowly acclimates to possession of a second set of ears.

Addendum: SCP-CXXX was discovered present in several wild humans living within forested areas in Japan, in particular, Aokigahara. After subsequent extraction (always ending in termination), several grown instances were transported in tanks to the US for study using Site-42's Spatial Passageway for Intercontinental Transit2. During transit, the unit containing SCP-CXXX was unsealed, but was recontained quickly. However, during this, the researcher overseeing transport of SCP-CXXX, Junior Researcher Jesse Mantell, was infected with 2 grown instances of SCP-CXXX. Unaware of the psychoactive effects of the anomaly, Researcher Mantell was tested and subsequently relinquished back into the workforce shortly after. Shortly after, it became apparent that Researcher Mantell was no longer fit for Foundation work, and was terminated by a member of staff after understanding the risks associated with the hazard. Records of Researcher Mantell's interactions with faculty post-infection are available upon request.
